Our grades 3-5 are currently participating in the badminton unit. We are starting with the basics including learning proper grip [when looking down at your racket, your thumb and index finger should make a 'V']. Students are also learning the proper way to serve [ hold shuttle by feathers just below your chest, drop shuttle, then swing]. Some of our students have a difficult time making contact with the shuttle, so instead of using the shuttles, we switch them out for balloons so everyone gets a chance at success.
Students at New Maryland Elementary School have been working hard at their underhand toss. The underhand toss was taught after the rolling and bowling unit. This is something that you can practice at home easily. All you need is a laundry basket, and clean socks! The important vocabulary to use while practicing includes lock same foot that you throw with, step with opposite, swing are straight back and release!
